Researchers supported by the Stanford Sustainability Accelerator, including Giulio De Leo, Professor of Oceans, Earth System Science, and Biology, are introducing fish to rice fields in rural African communities to control snail populations and reduce transmission of schistosomiasis, a debilitating disease, affecting about 240 million people globally, which is transmitted through water contaminated by a parasite. As part of the 2025-2026 Science Writing Advancing Global and Planetary Health (SWAP) program, undergraduate student Casey Greene worked with Dr. De Leo on this project. By creating fact sheets to increase awareness in integrating fish into agriculture, this solution will address rice farmers’ health risks.
